Japan-based Honda Motor Company (NYSE: HMC) (TYO: 7267), Mazda Motor Corporation (TYO: 7261) and Nissan Motor Company (NASDAQ: NSANY) (TYO: 7201) have halted production of new cars and work in certain Chinese plants and dealerships.
The automakers have taken this decision because of protests, acts of vandalism, and general anti-Japan sentiment in China. These actions are due to the recent territorial dispute between Tokyo and Beijing respectively.
Nissan halted production at its Guangzhou- and Zhengzhou-based factories for two days, while Honda is stopping production at Guangzhou and Wuhan factories on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Mazda will also stop building cars at its Nanjing assembly plant for four days from Tuesday.
