General Motors Corporation (NYSE:GM), a United States-based automaker, is likely to lose around $49,000 on every Chevrolet Volt it sells, according to a new report.
The estimated losses result from the vehicle’s high development costs and expensive components.
The automaker has never publicly stated the amount it has spent on producing the Volt, including development costs, but a Reuters survey of industry experts estimated that the cost of the Volt programme would equate to a build cost of as much as $89,000 for each car. This compares very unfavourably with its base sale price of $39,995.
