Fiat SpA (NYSE: FIA) (ISE: IT0001976403), an Italy-based automaker, is planning to start production of cars at its idled Italian plants to be sold in the United States, Economic Times has reported citing a source close to the matter.

The automaker is taking this step as the government plans fiscal and other incentives to help the group’s exports.

Chief executive Sergio Marchionne met Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti to discuss how the Italian automaker can keep its plants open at a time when car sales have decreased to their lowest level in 40 years.
