If you’re like me, you hated history when you were young, but as an adult you’ve come to appreciate that there’s a lot more to history than there seemed to be based on the way we were taught. Sadly, however, because we weren’t properly taught history as children, putting together a good history program for our kids can be tortuously difficult. We have to struggle just to understand history ourselves, let alone teach it. If only our own teachers had given us the gift of the “history habit” when we were younger.

One of my favorite comics is the long running strip about newspaperwoman Brenda Starr. When Ms. Starr is confronted with a moral dilemma, a little devilish Brenda sits on one of her shoulders while a little angelic Brenda sits on the other. They then proceed to argue with each another until Ms. Starr finally makes a decision.
Our history curriculum at one time was based on ancient history. To bring the culture of Greek and Roman to a greater level of understanding I instituted Comics studies Greek and Roman day.
National interest is also of major interest to many people. As a group of people head through their lives, united with others of the same nationality, they must want to know where the group as a whole is headed. Much of the published poetry in this category contains hopes and dreams for a country’s future and expected path through history. More of the poetry in this category though is in protest of how a nation has forged its’ path as it has grown. Frustration with events beyond one’s control elicits words that can only have their full meaning in poetry. Since those of a nation are united with each other, poetic commentaries about that nation are of interest to everyone. They help each person express their feelings and frustrations and hopes for their home country.
These and many others did not make it past the cutting room floor of moral relativism in government schools. Let’s create an ongoing book list of the fascinating forgotten epic stories.
Twombly’s career does not follow any inclined graph. He was first noticed in 1950s, when his pencil work, similar to Graffiti, seemed to distort Abstract Expressionism.
