BMW AG (Xetra: BMW), a Germany-based automaker, is developing its new Z4 sports car based on the Toyota GT86.

This move is based on the long-term partnership with Toyota Motor Corporation (NYSE: TM) (LSE: TYT) (TYO: 7203). The two firms signed a contract in January to jointly develop a new sports car platform, among other things.

Motor Trend has reported that the new BMW Z4 will be built on a modified version of the rear-wheel drive platform that underpins the Toyota GT86, Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ.
